Art & Design - Mrs Van Roy

Intent

At Oldfield Park Junior School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

 

Art, craft and design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

 

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Oldfield Park Junior School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by a skills-based approach.

 

The children are taught Art as part of their termly topic work.  Areas covered include sculpture/3-d work, printing, painting, sketching, textiles and multi-media. Through Year 3-6, the children make progress through the learning of increasing skills and art awareness and appreciation. The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning.  More detail can be found in the Art Curriculum Map.

 

The children's learning is further enhanced with a whole school art topic in the summer term; where all children have the opportunity to visit a local Museum and gallery, studying a piece of art in line with the National Gallery’s Take One project. The piece chosen by the museum is then used to inspire the children and in turn creates the basis of our child-led planning.

 

Impact

Through the delivery of an inspiring and rich Art & Design curriculum, children are enabled to not only make progress through skills acquired, but also to express themselves, in this way they feel a sense of individuality and freedom. Children’s well-being and mental health is of paramount importance to us at Oldfield Park Junior School, and the impact this subject has on the children is clear to see.

 

Due to the skills and genres the children gain through art, craft and design; they then feel passionate about the subject which inspires them to participate in the Arts Award. The children are given the opportunity to gain either the Explore or Bronze level of this qualification, which they complete during an extra-curricular club.

 

The children’s work is celebrated throughout our school displays and during open evenings and events. Some of our children’s work is also exhibited in The Holburne Museum during Term 6, showcasing their work generated from the Take One project in Term 5. The impact this has on the children’s self-esteem is immeasurable.

 

Oldfield Park Junior School has achieved the gold Arts Mark due to the implementation and impact of the art and design subject across the school.
