Year 5 - Parton and Valli

Welcome to Year 5

Miss Miller and Miss Mullaly are delighted to be part of your child's learning experience this year as Dolly Parton Class and Frankie Valli Class. We will be supported by Mrs Warren, Mrs Randle and Kim. We are always around to support both you and the children. Below, you will find an example of our 'normal' weekly timetable. We will endevour to keep to this, though as you know, school life can be variable and surprising, and we will let the children know of any changes in advance!

Term 4: Sutton Who?

Wow, we're already in the second half of the year! This term Year 5 will be working as historical detectives, exploring the mystery of Sutton Hoo - who did the famous bronze helmet, buried longship and treasure hoard at this Anglo-Saxon burial site belong to? We will explore the reasons for the Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain, the kings and kingdoms of the time, the changes in religious beliefs and the legacy that the Anglo-Saxon people left for Britain.

Maths

In term 4 we will be covering these topic areas in mathematics. If you have any questions regarding how your child can be best supported please drop us an email. 

Decimals and Percentages (decimal and fraction equivalents - tenths and hundredths;  thousandths as fractions and decimals; ordering and comparing decimals up to 3 decimal places; rounding decimals to wholes and 2 decimal place; equivalnet percentages, decimals and fractions) 

Perimeter and Area (perimeter of rectangles, recilinear shapes and ploygons; area of rectangles and compound shapes) 

Statistics (drawing, reading and interpreting line graphs; reading and interpreting tables)

In order to better support our spellers, we will be completing a weekly spelling quiz to help secure basic understanding.

As usual, children may require some extra assistance when learning the words as they will delivered in a contextually correct sentence – for example: “The children kept their shoes in a small box beneath the stairs”.

Their weekly results will be used as evidence to support their writing assessments at the end of the school year.

Term 3: Renaissance Man

This term in Year 5, we will be delving into the incredible achievements of Leonardo da VInci, from his portrait painting and inventions to detailed botanical sketches and anatomical discoveries!  We will be reading 'THe Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm' by Norman HUnter and using this comedic writing to inspire our own narrative writing. We will also develop our Word Processing skills in Computing, creating biographies for da VInci.

Term 2: Beyond the wardrobe doors...

Throughout term 2 we will have a literacy focus, using the classic novel, 'The Lion, THe Witch and The Wardrobe' by C. S. Lewis to inspire our writing and reading skill development. In our topic lessons we will learn about volcanoes and mountains and this will carry though to our Art, where the children will develop their skills in sculpture using papier-mache to create their own fiery volcanoes!

 Term 1: Rainforest Rescue!

This term we will be learning all about the rainforest - from the creatures that live there and where these delicate habitats are found around the world, to the ecological impacts of deforestation and the efforts being made to save the rich ecosystems. We will be reading the exciting novel 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell, following Fred as he crashes and tries to survive in the Amazon rainforest!
