History - Mrs Gatter

Based in a Victorian School building within the Georgian city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Oldfield Park Junior School has always been passionate about studying history. OPJS recognises the importance of teaching not just the events of the past, but also the implications of historical events as well as teaching the skills involved in undertaking these historical enquiries; we aim to stimulate children’s curiosity to know more about the past. We encourage children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the study of History, children will begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Our history curriculum teaching follows a chronological order from pre-history to 1066 and is complemented by further studies of both local history and periods of particular relevance. We enjoy enthusing the children through dressing-up days and aim to include visits to historical sites and museums to further encourage their interest in the topic of study. As a Heritage School in our own right, we are fortunate enough to have the support and guidance of our local Historic England representative. History is taught through discrete lessons as well as through links with the wider curriculum such as their English writing and art.

Children are made ready for the next stage of their History education, they are equipped with new knowledge, skills and vocabulary. They have gained the knowledge and skills in order to question their environment. Children have developed a respect for the events and people of the past.
