Welcome to Year 6

The Year 6 team (led by Miss Mullaly and Mr Dack) are delighted to be part of your child's learning experience as they enter Year 6 and move towards the end of their time with us at Oldfield Park Junior School. We are here to support your children and you as parents in any way possible. Term 5 - "The Witcombe Cabinet"

This term we will be taking part in our Take One art project - an investigation into the heritage of the Witcombe Cabinet. Through our studies we shall be looking at authentic art from the East (both Chinese and Japanese) as well as taking on a brand new text - "Young Samurai" by Chris Bradford. In geography we will be making comparisons between the United Kingdom and a country in the developing world, and our computing sessions will see us investigating fact and fiction online. All this and our SATs too!

Term 5 Spellings:

Last year we completed an analysis of all of the SATs Spelling Assessments and put together this document - the words in black have already appeared on the test and those in grey are future possibilities. The patterns and the words themselves may be useful and should be added to the children's revision folder. From this point forward, our Friday spelling test will feature twelve words taken at random from the list below:

Term 4 - "Temples and Trials"

Embarking on an adventure that will take us to the jungles of South America in order to uncover the mystery of the Maya and their lost civilisation. Over the term we will be examining the Maya timeline, making comparisons to both the Viking, Roman and Anglo-Saxon civilisations and gaining a better understanding of this forgotten people and the impact they had on the wider world. Below you will find a copy of our theme leaflet laying out our learning this term:

Term 3 - "Citizens of the World"

What does it mean to be a citizen? How do we contribute to society? What societal changes have occurred that have shaped how we live today? Through the lens of a fictional planet, Year 6 will debate, vote and untangle a series of societal issues in order to make the perfect civilisation. Over the term we will be looking at a number of historical events that helped create the country we live in today as well as investigating the importance of having a voice in an ever-changing society.

"Who Were the Vikings?" World Premiere 05/01/2024

This Friday saw the launch of the children's video and a short Oscar ceremony for stand-out achievements. It was great fun and the children were all incredibly excited. They're exceptionally proud of their work, so if you get a minute (or twenty) check out the video below. We've added a few photos from the event just so you can get a flavour of the event:

Who Were the Vikings?

Finally, after months in development, the children's long-awaited documentary about the Vikings is here! The premiere will take place on Friday the 5th January at 2pm online. The children have requested the opportunity to wear full "Oscar" worthy outfits - it seems like a good idea. Full details will follow when we start Term 3 proper! Expect a factual masterclass in the Vikings, their civilisation and accomplishments ... there's one or two factual errors though: can you spot what they are?

Term 3 Spellings:

In order to better support our spellers, we will be completing a weekly spelling quiz to help secure basic understanding.

As usual, children may require some extra assistance when learning the words as they will delivered in a contextually correct sentence – for example: “The children kept their shoes in a small box beneath the stairs”.

Their weekly results will be used as evidence to support their writing assessments at the end of the school year.
